Developing Emotional Intelligence
“Emotional Intelligence is the ability to feel, understand, articulate, and effectively apply the power of emotions as a source of human energy.”
To succeed in a rapidly changing world of diverse cultural norms and behaviors, we must effectively manage our own as well as others’ emotions.
That’s why a cornerstone of Salisbury Consulting is developing the emotional intelligence of individuals, groups and organizations.
The Business Case for Emotional Intelligence
“The most powerful agent of growth and transformation is something much more basic than any technique; a change of heart.” --John Welwood
The evidence is overwhelming that emotional intelligence is critical to creating high performing leaders; innovative and productive teams; and successful, profitable organizations. Emotional intelligence (EI) includes the abilities, competencies and skills required for understanding oneself and others. This includes relating to people, and coping with the world. The business case for EI is compelling:
- Globally, EI is a stronger predictor of success than work experience or high IQ.
- High leader EI creates climates where information sharing, trust, healthy risk taking and learning can flourish.
- High EI skilled teams perform at higher levels faster and are more creative, with lower levels of absenteeism
- The primary cause of derailment in leaders involve deficits in emotional competence. Experiencing and expressing positive emotions and moods at work tends to enhance performances at all levels.
- Manufacturing supervisors who receive training in Emotional Intelligence (EI) had 50% less lost time and accidents. They exceeded productivity goals significantly.
Contrary to cultural beliefs, EI can be learned. Our brains are wired to connect with others and our capacity for doing so is great. The key to leading with EI lies in having the opportunity to assess our EI strengths and learn new tools for unleashing their potential in leaders.
We integrate EI practices and insight into our coaching, consulting and development programs.
